Some education projects we have worked on:
Ruislip High School
Melliss were appointed in January 2005 by the London Borough of Hillingdon to undertake the RIBA Stages A-C design of a new secondary school, Phase I of which had to be ready for an intake of 150 year six pupils in September 2006. We were novated after RIBA Stage C to the main contractor, Miller Construction, to complete the design.
Ruislip High School has been presented with National Green Plaque in recognition of their positive contribution to the built environment.
National Treasures buildings and structures have chosen the school as Green Apple Award winners for perserving our architectural heritage.
The Green Organisation is an independent environment group dedicated to promoting the positive side of environmental endeavour.
Both phases of the project are constructed mainly in reinforced concrete, although certain areas, such as the sports hall, are in structural steelwork. Breeam, sustainability and environmental impact were of prime importance in the design of the school.
The building being located in close proximity of existing public playing fields and close to Yeading Brook, were within the 100 year Flood Plain and required close development with the Environment Agency with regard to sustainability and environmental impact. Compensatory re-grading works were carried out due to flood plain encroachment, and sustainability measures used, which included permeable hard-standings, attenuated sub-bases and approximately 2,500 sq. m of green roof areas to filter and control the discharge of surface water ensuring a fully sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) was employed. Drainage improvements necessary to the retained public playing field areas included extensive installation of field drains and associated use of existing site features discharging into a new balancing lake blended and contoured into surrounding landscape.
The final cost of the external works will be around £2 million, with the overall construction cost of the school being £16 million.
City Academy London
This is a new secondary school to accommodate 1150 students, which opened in the spring of 2005. The main 2 storey teaching block comprises of a reinforced concrete framed building supported on piled foundations, with floors formed with precast concrete planks.
The sports hall, atrium, assembly hall and performing arts buildings are a mixture of reinforced and precast concrete floors, columns and beams with lightweight steel roofs.
The associated infra-structure works include a new site entrance and an extensive Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) to attenuate the storm water run off. The SUDS included permeable paving, swales and a detention pond before discharging into a local flood sensitive brook, all to the full approval of the Environment Agency.
